Reduce danger due to fogged windows
Practical tips from Behr Hella Service for sensible use of the air-conditioning system in damp and cold weather
Schwäbisch Hall, December 2007. Fogged windows represent a safety risk. This danger increases when the weather is wet and cold. In this weather, the air is generally more humid than in spring and summer. In addition, our clothing, shoes and umbrellas mean that moisture is carried into the interior of the vehicle again and again. Thus, water remains in the car. This water collects on the floor mats, for example. If the car is full of passengers, the build-up of fogging is increased due to human breath. The air-conditioning system quickly ensures a clear view. It dries the air in the interior, the windows quickly become clear again. If recirculated-air operation is selected immediately, this will happen even more quickly. Those who take to heart the following tips from the thermal management experts at Behr Hella Service will get through the winter well and safely:
- Switch on the air-conditioning system
- Direct the air flow only to the windscreen
- Press the recirculated-air switch, if available
- Set the blower and heating to the maximum level
- Switch off recirculated-air operation again after a short period* and set the blower switch to the middle level.
In the case of heating operation with the air-conditioning system switched on, the air is not only warmed up, but also dried at the same time. This contributes to making the interior climate more healthy. In order to ensure that the air-conditioning compressor is always supplied with oil and that the seals in the entire system do not dry out, the air-conditioning system should be switched on for a few minutes each week, even in winter. This helps to avoid possible damage, and the air-conditioning system will be well prepared for operation in the spring.
*Note:
In the case of some models, the automatic air conditioning switches itself off automatically if the outside temperature drops below a certain level (approximately +4 °C). Press contact
