Examples of reasons for failure of the turbocharger related to the intercooler
The intercooler can also be affected by damage to the turbocharger, since chips from the turbocharger (compressor side) can become lodged in it. If chips from the intercooler get into the engine, this can result in capital engine damage.
What has to be taken into account in the case of chips in the intercooler?
- Cleaning is very time-consuming and costly, thus usually uneconomical – this is particularly the case with passenger cars.
- Even if the intercooler is cleaned, it is impossible to be 100% certain that all chips have been removed from the intercooler.
- Intercoolers with turbulence inserts cannot be flushed or cleaned on account of their design.
- The intercooler should be replaced to prevent further damage in the event of chips in the intercooler!
