Electronically controlled Visco® coupling improves engine cooling and helps to comply with the Euro 5 and 6 emission standards
Schwäbisch Hall, June 2010. The new Visco® coupling developed by thermo management experts Behr Hella Service now ensures map-controlled and electronic regulation of the fan. This enables the more stringent engine cooling requirements to be met for ensuring compliance with the Euro 5 and 6 emission standards.
The controllability and the dynamic behaviour of the Visco® coupling have been significantly improved. It now transmits 40% more torque although the exterior dimensions have remained virtually the same. The retarder function has been considerably improved by ensuring that the fan switches on as soon as the braking phase commences. The fan is activated more precisely than was previously the case to cope with the respective cooling requirements. This process also completely eliminates any unnecessary fan noise. The fan hub has been optimally adapted to the Visco® coupling: Flow distributors and stabilisers ensure that the inflowing radiator air is channelled through the cooling ribs and fed smoothly into the throughflow of the fan vanes. This process produces better cooling of the silicone oil in the Visco® coupling and improved permissible slip performance, which is especially important for the high loads in commercial vehicles. Anyone who is interested can find more information about the structure, function, functional testing and impacts in the case of malfunctions in a "Technical Information" on the Hella Aftermarket Club online portal.
