How To's: Tips from thermal specialists that save you time and money
Schwäbisch Hall, July 2010. Contamination can lead to cooler breakdown. The most common culprit is "rust sludge", which is caused by using the wrong antifreeze agent, failing to clean the system sufficiently when making repairs or by reusing coolant effluent. "Rust sludge" blocks the narrow channels in the system and accelerates corrosion and wear. The cooling system requires flushing by a professional. The extent of the contamination and the various vehicle manufacturer instructions specify the method and the flushing agent to be used. In modern flat-tube cooling systems, however, it is often no longer possible to flush all components, meaning that the parts have to be replaced. Coolers and heat exchangers are particularly affected. Electrical valves, thermostat and cover cannot be flushed either and also need to be replaced. Tips and specific instructions on flushing and how to dispose of cooling- and cleaning agents and how to refill cooling agent are provided by the thermal management experts at Behr Hella Service and Hella Online in a "Technical Information" in the Hella Aftermarket Club.
