MECHANICAL TURBOCHARGER DAMAGE - WHY REPLACING THE INTERCOOLER IS IMPORTANT!
In the case of damage to the turbocharger the intercooler may be affected as well as, for example, chips from the turbocharger (compressor side) can collect in the intercooler. If chips from the intercooler reach the engine this can seriously damage the engine.
Examples of intercooler-related causes of failure for the turbocharger
When chips are trapped inside the intercooler it is important to observe the following:
- Cleaning is very costly and therefore can be unprofitable, particularly in the case of passenger cars.
- When the intercooler is cleaned, there is no 100% guarantee that all the chips will be removed from the component.
- Intercoolers with turbulator inserts cannot be flushed or cleaned due to their particular design.
- To avoid further damage in the event that stone chips become trapped inside the intercooler, the intercooler should always be replaced!
